Questions people actually ask

Everything else.

Is 2048 free to play?

Yes. Every version — web, iOS, and Android — is free, open source, and carries no ads, no trackers, and no in-app purchases. There is nothing to unlock and nothing to buy.

Do I need an account to play?

No. The game is local-first: your board, your score, and your best score live on the device you are playing on, and a round never waits on the network. An account is optional and only adds cross-device sync and the leaderboard.

How do you win 2048?

Combine matching tiles until one of them reads 2048. Every valid move slides every tile in one direction, merges each pair of equal neighbours once, and spawns a new 2 or 4. Reaching 2048 shows a win panel, and you can keep playing for 4096 and beyond.

What is the best 2048 strategy?

Pick one corner and never move your largest tile out of it. Keep your biggest tiles along a single edge, build that row in descending order, and avoid the direction that would empty the corner. Merging early keeps space free, and space is what you actually run out of.

Can I play 2048 offline?

Yes. The web version is an installable progressive web app and works with no connection at all; the iOS and Android apps never need one either. Only the optional account features talk to a server.

What happens to my current game when I sign in?

Nothing is lost. The round you are playing stays saved on that device, and the game warns you before it leaves the screen. Signing in loads the round saved to your account instead, and signing out brings your own round back exactly as you left it — board, score, and best score.

Does my progress sync between devices?

With a free account, yes. Each device uploads the round it is playing and downloads the one the account already had. When two devices disagree the further round wins and the other is kept in a recoverable slot, so nothing is silently thrown away.

Is there a 2048 app for iPhone and Android?

Yes. This project ships a native SwiftUI app for iOS and a native Jetpack Compose app for Android alongside the web version. All three follow the same rules, so a habit built in one transfers to the others.

How is the score calculated?

Only newly created tiles score, and each scores its own value. Merging two 8s adds 16. Sliding tiles without merging adds nothing, and a move that changes nothing on the board scores nothing and spawns nothing.

Can I undo a move in 2048?

One step, on every client. Undo restores the exact board and score from immediately before your last valid move. The snapshot is used up once you take it, so undo never rewinds further than a single move.

Start a fresh board?

Your best score stays safe, but this round will be replaced.
